St. Josephine Bakhita CES News

Welcome to the first edition of The Bruin Bulletin!  This weekly news bulletin will keep our community up to date on everything new and exciting taking place at St. Josephine Bakhita Catholic Elementary School – opening this September.  We will update parents and students on the progress of the school building, invite you to information nights taking place this spring, and provide you with the information you will need as we move closer to opening our doors in five short months.  Beginning next week, only subscribers to St. Josephine Bakhita’s Newswire will receive this bulletin, so please visit https://stjosephine.wcdsb.ca/ and subscribe if your children will be attending our school in September.

Our Patron Saint – St. Josephine Bakhita

Our school is named after a truly inspiring individual – St. Josephine Margaret Bakhita (1869-1947).  She is the patron saint of human trafficking and her personal story of suffering, forgiveness, hope, resilience, strength, and love for God will be an inspiration for our students, faculty, and broader school community.  She was known for her charismatic personality, gentle voice, and generous smile.  St. Josephine Bakhita was Beatified in 1992 and Cannonized (declared a Saint) in 2000.  She is the first Black woman to receive this honor in the modern era.

Our Mascot and School Colours – Welcome to Bruin Country!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our school mascot survey!  We received a lot of great ideas but had to choose only one mascot/school nickname – we are…The Bruins!

For those curious – a Bruin is a Brown Bear.  We are working with a creative team that includes Chuck Temple (illustrator for the best-selling children’s book series ‘Brady Brady’) to create our mascot/logo.

Our school colours will be light blue, yellow, and white.  To get a better idea, here is a mock-up of our school’s athletic jerseys.

Have a GREAT week and stay tuned for more information in next week’s edition of The Bruin Bulletin!
