Our Patron Saint – St. Josephine Bakhita

Our school is named after a truly inspiring individual – St. Josephine Margaret Bakhita (1869-1947).  She is the patron saint of human trafficking and her personal story of suffering, forgiveness, hope, resilience, strength, and love for God will be an inspiration for our students, faculty, and broader school community.  She was known for her charismatic personality, gentle voice, and generous smile.  St. Josephine Bakhita was Beatified in 1992 and Cannonized (declared a Saint) in 2000.  She is the first Black woman to receive this honor in the modern era.

School Visits

Our Principal, Mr. Lynch, will be visiting the students coming to our school from Blessed Sacrament (April 26th a.m. recess), OLOG (April 28th a.m. recess), and John Sweeney (April 28th lunch).

Parent & Student Information Nights

We have scheduled two Parent & Student Information Nights – May 25th @ Our Lady of Grace CES (70 Gracefield Cres., Kitchener) and June 1 @ St. Kateri Tekakwitha CES (560 Pioneer Drive, Kitchener) – both from 6:00-7:00 p.m.  Both WCDSB Board Staff and St. Josephine Bakhita staff will be in attendance to provide information and answer questions you may have.  We hope your family can attend one of the information sessions.

Welcome to Kindergarten Night

Our Welcome to Kindergarten Night is taking place June 8th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the St. Kateri Tekakwitha CES Learning Commons (Library).  This session is only intended for those students entering Year 1 (Junior Kindergarten).  St. Kateri is located at 560 Pioneer Drive in Kitchener.

Exciting News!

Some of you are probably familiar with local artist Timothy Schmalz.  Two years ago, Timothy created a beautiful, life-sized bronze sculpture depicting St. Josephine Bakhita ‘releasing’ victims of human trafficking that is now on display in St. Peter’s Square.  Our board had commissioned a smaller, 6 foot replica of that statue that will be displayed in our front foyer.

Have a GREAT week and stay tuned for more information in next week’s edition of The Bruin Bulletin!
